Where to Eat Vegetarian Ramen in Bangkok, Thailand
Need a break from Thai food? Japanese cuisine is hugely popular in Bangkok, thanks at least partially to the high number of Japanese expats living there. Many Japanese restaurants are located in the Thong Lor/Ekkamai area of Sukhumvit, one of the trendiest neighborhoods in town, but really you can find ramen, soba, sushi, and izakaya spots anywhere in the city. While there is an abundance of ramen shops, sadly, only a few of them have vegetarian/vegan options. Luckily, a couple of them are really great!
Mensho Tokyo
If this were the only place in Bangkok to get vegetarian ramen, you would not be disappointed. Japanese chain Mensho Tokyo’s vegan tantanmen is rich and flavorful, with perfectly al dente noodles in a thick, opaque broth topped with soy mince, peanuts, edamame, and assorted veggies and herbs. This is also my meat-eating boyfriend’s favorite ramen place in Bangkok, so it’s a good choice if you have omnivores in your group. However, it’s also more expensive than most other ramen places, with the vegan tantanmen setting you back 350 baht (about €10), but it IS quality! It’s also conveniently located in Phrom Phong not too far from the BTS, so it makes a great lunch stop if you have shopping to do in the area. Mensho Tokyo’s vegan ramen also made my list of Bangkok’s Absolute Best Vegetarian Meals.
Hideya Ramen
Hideya, previously located off Soi 11 in the Nana area of Sukhumvit, is now down by the Phra Khanong BTS. I really enjoy the balance of sesame, garlic, and chili flavors in their vegetarian “tonkotsu” ramen, made with soy rather than pork. It’s not as heavy as the tantanmen at Mensho, both in taste and price, at only 200 baht (€5.50) for a bowl. This is a great option if you’re in the mood for ramen, but don’t want something super indulgent. To be honest, that’s how I feel pretty often, so I like this place just as much as Mensho.
Yuzu Ramen
Sadly, Misoya, the OG spot in Bangkok for vegetarian ramen, is now closed for good. Back when I first moved to Thailand it was literally the only place I could find serving it! Apparently, though, Yuzu Ramen at Siam Square has now started serving veggie ramen. They did not have it while I was there, so it seems to be a fairly recent addition to the menu. I haven’t tried it, but it’s probably a better bet than the final place on my list….
Lust Ramen
You can get vegetarian ramen at Lust Ramen near the National Stadium, and that’s pretty much it for reasons it’s on this list, as I can’t really say I recommend it. Let’s just say the ramen has more in common with Top Ramen than with anything authentically Japanese. But hey, if that’s what you’re craving, then go for it! It certainly won’t cost you much at just 80 baht (a little over €2) for vegan mushroom ramen.
And that’s pretty much it for vegetarian ramen in Bangkok! Some restaurants may have it as a special occasionally, particularly during the Vegetarian Festival every October.
Have you tried any of these places? What’s your favorite ramen spot in Bangkok?
