Where to Try Vegetarian and Vegan Khao Soi in Bangkok, Thailand

Khao soi is a curry noodle soup from northern Thailand and a must-try for visitors to the country. Though Chiang Mai in the north is the main khao soi destination for tourists, it’s a popular dish in the capital, Bangkok, too. When I lived in Bangkok, I used to visit Chiang Mai pretty frequently, but between trips I’d need to satisfy my khao soi cravings.

What is khao soi?

Khao soi consists of a rich and creamy yellow curry base and noodles, topped with more crispy fried noodles. It’s served with garnishes of fresh lime, pickled greens, onion, and chili.

But not only is traditional khao soi topped with chicken, but many Thai curry pastes contain shrimp, so it can be a little challenging to find a vegetarian option.

Here, I’ve rounded up a list of some of my favorite vegetarian and vegan restaurants for khao soi in Bangkok.

The prices are up-to-date as far as I am aware, but they could change. As of August 2022, 1 euro = 35 baht.

✮Top Pick✮ Khun Churn

Price: 90 baht

Diet: Vegetarian

Khun Churn began in Chiang Mai and has had a few different locations around Bangkok, but is now back near its original spot by the Ekkamai BTS. They have one of my all-time favorite veggie khao sois and at a super reasonable price. The only issue is that it’s vegetarian, not vegan!

✮Top Pick✮ Goodsouls

Price: 180 baht

Diet: Vegan

Titled “Northern Thai Noodle Soup” on the menu, Goodsouls’ khao soi is my other top pick for veggie khao soi in Bangkok. Goodsouls is also a small chain originally from Chiang Mai–not surprising! They are a bit pricier than Khun Churn, but they are entirely vegan, and they have some creative takes on Thai and Thai-inspired dishes if you want to try more than just khao soi.

May Veggie Home

Price: 130 baht

Diet: Vegan, gluten-free

May Veggie Home is one of my favorite restaurants in Bangkok and they have a very solidly tasty selection of vegan Thai dishes. One of those is a vegan khao soi, and unlike the other restaurants on this list, they use rice noodles instead of wheat noodles. This is a plus for people looking for a gluten-free option, though I still recommend you double check about the fried noodles that go on top.

Vistro

Price: 260 baht

Diet: Vegan

At 260 baht, Vistro has the most expensive khao soi on this list. However, Vistro works to justify their prices–and not just by being located in the upscale Phrom Phong neighborhood. Their dishes are high-quality with a lot of care and attention to detail put into their recipes. Since they opened, they’ve been tweaking their khao soi recipe to make sure it’s the best it can be.

Bamboo Garden

Price: 50 baht

Diet: Jae vegan

Bamboo Garden is a classic jae street food stall located in the Ari neighborhood. Jae food is traditional Thai vegetarian food and abides by a few additional rules other than “no meat”: they also don’t use any pungent vegetables, like garlic and onions. Jae food stalls are usually very cheap and serve pre-made food from trays. Bamboo Garden has a few made-to-order dishes, including khao soi.

Bamboo Garden is kind of hard to find, and I’ve been there before, but last time I tried to go (2021) I couldn’t find it AT ALL. I believe it may have been closed for covid-related reasons. However, it IS open now, so if you are in the Ari area, it’s worth checking out.

Kaek Kao Kua

Price: 150 baht

Diet: Vegan

Okay, so I haven’t actually tried the khao soi from Kaek Kao Kua, but I want to mention it anyway because I was DESPERATE to order from them since…well, they’re a vegan noodle place, so duh!! However, they were closed for quite a while due to covid restrictions and I left Thailand before they reopened, so I never got a chance. They look so amazing, though!
