Taste Test: 5 Reese’s Cups, Ranked

It’s hard to beat a Reese’s Cup when it comes to classic candy bars. Chocolate and peanut butter are well-known to be an illegal drug-esque combination for addictive properties, and while Reese’s Cups may not be the most sophisticated version, they still fulfill that need for sugar ‘n’ nuts.
There are various riffs on the original Reese’s Cup available, so I decided to try five of the classic milk chocolate and peanut butter versions to see how they compare.
5. Mini Cups Unwrapped
Unsurprisingly, these were the worst of the bunch. Whatever they do to keep them from melting gives them the texture of sand held together with wax. They don’t taste particularly strongly of either chocolate or peanut butter. Why wouldn’t you just take the extra effort to unwrap them? Is it to use less packaging? It’s not like you’re scooping them into your reusable burlap sack in the bulk department at Whole Foods, sheesh.
4. Thins
I remember really liking Reese’s Thins when I first had them, and while they don’t have texture issues of the Unwrapped Cups, the chocolate-to-peanut-butter ratio is off. There’s too much chocolate, when what we need is peanut butter.
3. Original
Some might find this to be slander and blasphemy, but the original Reese’s Cups only make it to third place. While the peanut butter-chocolate ratio appears to be better than Thins, the peanut butter taste isn’t as strong as I would like.
2. Mini Cups
Just the smell of these foil-wrapped nuggets of gold takes me back to being a kid, admiring my Halloween haul. They have a good ratio and taste more peanut buttery than the originals.
1. Big Cup
Bigger isn’t always better, but it sure is here. The people at Reese’s tend to go hard on the peanut butter the bigger their concoctions get, and that’s not a bad thing. (I once got a giant Reese’s Egg after Easter once and it was amazing. I weigh 15 pounds more now. It’s hard to say if that’s because of the Reese’s Egg or because this was 10 years ago, but you can’t prove they’re not related.)
