Coffee soda is not, as some might try to convince you, “wack”. Is it so unpopular in the United States that Coca-Cola stopped selling their Coca-Cola with Coffee there to focus on “Creations”, aka mystery flavors, instead? Yes, that is true, but it lives on in other countries and it DOES have precedent, people!
Coke with coffee reminds me a lot of “gassosa al caffe”, an Italian beverage that is basically coffee soda. I was introduced to coffee soda way back in the day when I worked at a coffee shop that sold Bibicaffe, a bottled brand of gassosa al caffe. Thanks to me and probably no one else, the shop went through its entire stock of Bibicaffe and then never carried it again, but I still remember fondly drinking it over ice with a little half and half.
My boyfriend–despite having lived abroad for over 15 years–is still a Midwest boy at heart. As such, he has some random, strong, and tightly adhered-to convictions about foods that do and do not belong together. While he’s normally open-minded and eats all kinds of gross stuff, he will not consider even trying Coke with coffee. NOT EVEN A SIP!! That is how deeply offended he is by the combination. I’m going to assume this is a widespread trend in the US, which is why it was discontinued.
I’ve had a few variations of Coca-Cola with Coffee over the years, with some being low-sugar rather than zero sugar, and this current Zero Sugar iteration is perfectly fine by me. I am, however, a regular Coke Zero drinker, so my tastes may be different from someone who never has it.
Would I drink Coca-Cola with Coffee Zero Sugar every day? Probably not. I don’t like drinking sweetened coffee daily. It also lacks the refreshing factor of regular Coke. However, it’s a fine occasional drink when the mood strikes.
There are also flavored variations of Coke with Coffee.
