Coca-Cola Zero, or Coke Zero, for those of who think a six-syllable name is three syllables too many (which is everyone but the parents of Maximilianos), is no stranger to the experimental flavor train. The folks at the Coca-Cola Company are well aware that they can throw any old nonsense out there and the novelty-loving public will never learn their lesson: that flavored Cokes peaked in 1985 with the introduction of Cherry Coke.
Or perhaps people have, in fact, been getting wise to the fact that most flavored Cokes are trash. I’m guessing it was Lemon Coke that tipped them off, finally, by being baffling bad despite Coke with a lemon slice being enjoyable. How does a company with billions of dollars take something as simple as Coke with lemon and make it taste like you spilled cola on your open package of disinfectant wipes and then inexplicably decided to pour the leftover liquid at the bottom of the pack into your mouth? Yes…they are a devious bunch.
And that’s how they figured out they should up the ante with their flavors and make them not only novel, but mysterious.
Enter: Coca-Cola Creations. Zero sugar. Mystery flavor.
The two most recent flavors in the Coca-Cola Creations line are “Dreamworld” and “Movement”. Dreamworld is supposed to taste like dreams, while Movement is supposed to taste like Spanish singer Rosalia. I jest about the latter flavor, but Movement is a collaboration with Rosalia.
So what do these flavors actually taste like? In an effort to figure it out, I made something I never thought I would: soda tasting notes.
Dreamworld Tasting Notes
Berries, candy, cola
Dreamworld smells like candy, but is more fruity in taste: not quite citrus, but a bit like tart berries. The cola flavor is surprisingly prominent, as sometimes with these flavored Cokes you can’t even tell they’re cola at all by the taste.
Movement Tasting Notes
Vanilla, wood, cola
The flavor of Movement is best summed up as “barrel-aged vanilla Coke”. It has a woody, almost musky smell but the vanilla comes through strongly when tasting. It’s certainly a more grown-up flavor than Dreamworld.
The Verdict
I can kind of appreciate the direction Movement is going, but it’s just not what I want from a soda. I’d be more likely to choose Dreamworld if I had to choose one to guzzle down with my lunch. While it’s fun to try the flavors and they’re not awful, I would never drink them regularly, and will live a perfectly fulfilling life never having either again. I will quite happily stick with drinking regular Coke Zero whenever I can’t get my hands on a Diet Dr Pepper.
